It's been a while

It's been a while since I updated this blog. During this time James Roper has been busy with a few more pebble releases. At the time of this writing, we're at 2.6.2, see the change log on open.jira.com for a summary on what's new and noteworthy.

Also, James has taken over the lead developer role for pebble. It was obvious for a while - I didn't find enough time to quickly answer to issues that he typically jumped on immediately. A big thanks for this, now I'll just need to set aside the time to upgrade this installation here. Luckily all versions of pebble have shown to be quite more stable than some (php-based) blog engines, so there's no immediate need to upgrade - one of the reasons I chose pebble in the beginning.

Finding time is a nice reminder: Being on the road quite often now (for Liferay), I've started to do Liferay community meetings where I'm travelling to. They are announced on my Liferay Blog, feel free to subscribe there to get a chance to meet, typically somewhere in europe. Even if you're not (yet?) working with Liferay, feel free to show up.

Social Bookmarks :

Pebble 2.5 RC 1 released

A big Thank You goes to James Roper for continuing to bring pebble forward. Last week he released pebble 2.5 RC 1 - go ahead, download and test.

Major new features to test in this release include:

New plugin manager - the old entering class names and property names manually is gone, and is replaced by a new interface with inline documentation for each plugin. See http://open.jira.com/wiki/display/PEBBLE/Plugin+Development for more information.

XSRF protection - Pebble should now be safe from XSRF attacks. If while using Pebble normally, you reach an error page saying "No Security Token", then you have probably encountered a bug. Read http://open.jira.com/wiki/display/PEBBLE/XSRF+Prevention for more information.

Facebook OpenID comment authors. This plugin can be enabled in the plugin administration (make sure you read the docs carefully, you need to setup a Facebook application for your blog and enter the ID for it into Pebble for this to work).

Twitter integration

Read his original announcement on the pebble mailing list.

Finally: Pebble 2.4 is out. Are you looking for a lightweight, java based blogging engine that's extremely easy to install? Pebble most likely has what you need.

Pebble 2.4 rc2 released

I've just released pebble 2.4rc2. It's been a while since 2.4rc1 and some bugs have been fixed as well as a few small features included. This is the first release since we moved svn to open.jira.com and started to use Jira as a bugtracker.

I expect 2.4 to be identical unless there's something very unexpected showing up or somebody can reproduce PEBBLE-3. Thanks for all the contributions and your patience with this release. Expect the final version before Christmas. This year!

Migrating pebble to open.jira.com

Readers here might know that I've "inherited" the pebble blogging engine - that this site is running on - from Simon Brown.

Currently the project is in the process of being migrated partly to http://open.jira.com/, where atlassian is starting to provide hosting service for open source projects. For me this is exciting. For one, I love Jira and pebble has not have an issue tracker for some time. I expect to get some more visibility for feature suggestions as well as bugs, that would otherwise move downwards in the mailing list history. Hopefully everybody will follow...

Part of the content will remain at sourceforge - I wouldn't give up the homepage and the download statistics we have there, even though there have been some issues with updating the homepage and the release process always takes longer than I suspect. But, the way these services operate, I think it's fine to leverage both for their strengths or the "got used to it" factor.

Also, I needed an excuse to play with git, so I've exported pebble (with git-svn) and made the repository available on github. I expect open.jira.com to be the home of pebble, but if someone feels more comfortable with git, I'll accept patches this way too. I really hope to be able to keep that repository up to date. The geek in me just had to do this.

.
